Betty’s Whine

I’ve been eating a lot of chocolate lately to make up for the lack of alcohol. I’m not going to lie: I miss drinking. I’m 28 weeks pregnant at the moment and I feel so silly trying to sneak sips from Jose’s wine glass that I just pour myself a small portion and watch my friend’s faces for judgement. I turn to everyone and state my disclaimer, “It’s my third baby”, which translates to “cut me some slack”! Before you worry, I’m being dramatic again. I wouldn’t be so irresponsible. I know the effects of alcohol and pregnancies, etc. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I caused harm to my baby. I’ll just drink non-alcoholic beer (or just wet my lips with the freshly-opened bottle of Shiraz) and pretend that my muscles are being relaxed on their own-magic! But, for you mommies who are NOT pregnant or trying to get pregnant, here are some fun wines on the market that make you feel oh-so-special (as if drinking the wine isn’t enough). [Read more…]

Dreams

This was Diego’s art work that came from school last week. I usually go through his bag the minute it comes home on Friday afternoons. Last week, Diego’s godparents came to visit from Kansas City, we had his birthday celebration on Saturday and I never looked in the bag until yesterday, Monday morning, a week later because his school broke for President’s/Winter break. As I discovered the presidential project, there was a shooting taking place in an Ohio school and this morning a second student died. All children are born with such innocence and huge dreams…I wanted to share Diego’s vision with you.

Bellezas

Whether or not JLo’s almost wardrobe malfunction last night was intentional, (Jose: “I see nipple!!!!”), the Latinas rocked it last night. JLo looked stunning in her Zuhair Murad gown and Cameron Diaz was not to be left behind. They were both gorgeous presenting at the 2012 Academy Awards but I’m not so sure how I felt about them showing of their other assets. What was up with this pose? I felt uncomfortable watching and then the giggling bit? Hmmm…no. [Read more…]

Book Review #2

I read a review somewhere (my baby brain will not allow me to remember the source) and Would It Kill You To Stop Doing That? by Henry Alford sounded like I would be learning…modern manners. Like, what should I do if someone is nasty on an email or on Facebook? You know, modern problems. Well this book wasn’t the typical “dos” and “don’ts” of proper etiquette. Alford’s meaty part of the book is advice to 23 different “commonly overlooked unpleasantries” that a group of people submitted to him. He then answered them in 14 pages. The book is 231 pages long. I wanted MORE. Like a list or something. So, it got me thinking and I do want to point out my personal pet peeves and make my own list because I consider myself the Queen of Manners (I kid! But I was once told that I apologize too much…well, I’m sorry for that). Here is my list of what I think are “unpleasantries”. [Read more…]

I’m Losing My Sanity Today

I can be a little dramatic and I said I would try to avoid these types of posts but I can’t help it. I’m losing my beloved babysitter today. Which means I will lose my mind today. My sanity. I’d rather lose my foot today! I told you I could be dramatic. But doesn’t this call for a little drama? I’ve been sad all day. Extra tired.
The story of how I met Isabella is quite nice really. [Read more…]

Space Theme Birthday Party

As always, we can not host a birthday party around here without a specified theme. Diego insisted on a Space theme this year (I wanted Asian/Martial Arts theme but it was not my party as Jose reminded me). [Read more…]

Our Favorite Kid Apps

My friend Tiz just got an iPhone! Welcome Tiz! She has two little girls and wanted to know what are our favorite iPhone applications for kids. Now, don’t get me wrong, Angry Birds will definitely keep your little one still at the restaurant while waiting for food! But there are so many educational and fun apps out there! Why not have them learn while glued to your phone?
My suggestions have been approved by Diego and I am a little guilty of not having many left on my phone at this point. This assignment has me hunting to re-install old ones that Diego loved and some new ones that Santi can be introduced to soon. [Read more…]

Five years…

My big boy turned 5 yesterday. I have been planning his birthday for about a month now and my thoughts have been filled with mixed emotions. Of course, I am thankful he is happy and healthy, a good boy and super clever. But I’m also a little melancholy over how fast the time has passed and that always lingering question, “what have I accomplished in the last five years??!?” The obvious, as everyone points out and I think it too, I’ve raised this amazing boy and for the past 14 months his baby brother. As I type, in my belly, my third baby boy is enjoying the rush of whatever portion he gets of my egg and cheese bagel sandwich. I know what it is to be a mom but I continue my journey of what makes me…me. [Read more…]

Gratitude

This past summer, our friends Luis and Vane joined us for a little beach get-away to Cape May, New Jersey. Bless their hearts for being brave and spending their vacation with a family of four! We rented a big SUV and drove for about three hours to the shore.
We ate, drank and exercised too! For some reason, this morning I remembered that while Vane and I did a workout on the beach, we did a little breathing exercise and somehow it flowed into paying gratitude to our bodies, our minds and…the ocean. I used to work for The Chopra Center in New York City years ago and I remember listening to Deepak Chopra talk about how nothing is a coincidence. Things align themselves in a way that is supposed to work for you. We need to take in the beauty of everything…see it, feel it, savor it and be grateful for it. That is why I love this latest article in the Dining and Wine section of the New York Times that published two days ago. Mindful Eating as Food for Thought is the anti-diet, it encourages people to [Read more…]

One Kind Act…Everyday

I just discovered this new blog! I came across this story about a dad who decided to do one act of kindness a day as his 2012 New Year’s resolution. Ryan Garcia became a new dad and wanted to become a better person. I love stories like this! He has already delivered blankets and food to a church, cleared snow off all the cars on his block, and wrote a thank you note to a former teacher. Check out his blog to read the other 37!
