Not as Healthy as You Think
Do you know that I have been to three different OBGYN doctors during my pregnancies in 3 different major cities (one in Japan) and not one has asked me about my diet? Not one has given me guidance on what to eat. I have also had 4 pediatricians in Tokyo, Singapore, New York City, and New Jersey and not one has asked me what I feed my children. The question has been, “are they drinking enough…about x amount of milk?” That’s it!! We have to do the asking.
I consider myself pretty healthy and educated in basic healthy eating habits for my family; I read a lot on what to buy, I watch the news…but yet, once in while I fall into a marketing trap! I realize that some people trust their local supermarkets and brands that label things as “healthy” or “low-sugar!” (heck, I trust EVERYTHING Whole Foods says). Knowledgeable friends help out and suggest different choices and articles. I recently came across an article on The Washington Post which is making the rounds right now, “5 So-Called Health Foods You Should Avoid”. People do their best in trying to eat right, some things are not so obvious and we shouldn’t be so trusting. In a nutshell, here is what Katherine Tallmadge writes: [Read more…]
Uh oh, Better Make That Appointment!

You better believe that the minute I read this New York Times piece, “Preschoolers in Surgery for a Mouthful of Cavities”, I ran to the phone and made that overdue dentist appointment for Diego. I also brushed his teeth myself this morning (although he does it twice on his own everyday) and I will let Santi stand on that bathroom stool he loves, climb up to the counter and brush away. I hope Diego has made it to five without any cavities, his last visit (shown in the above picture) was a year ago and I blame our move, my pregnancy, and having baby Santi for the missed appointment six months ago. I’m not going to be to hard on myself but the thought of a small child having to be treated for 12 cavities…they only have 20 teeth!!! [Read more…]
Betty’s Whine
I’ve been eating a lot of chocolate lately to make up for the lack of alcohol. I’m not going to lie: I miss drinking. I’m 28 weeks pregnant at the moment and I feel so silly trying to sneak sips from Jose’s wine glass that I just pour myself a small portion and watch my friend’s faces for judgement. I turn to everyone and state my disclaimer, “It’s my third baby”, which translates to “cut me some slack”! Before you worry, I’m being dramatic again. I wouldn’t be so irresponsible. I know the effects of alcohol and pregnancies, etc. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I caused harm to my baby. I’ll just drink non-alcoholic beer (or just wet my lips with the freshly-opened bottle of Shiraz) and pretend that my muscles are being relaxed on their own-magic! But, for you mommies who are NOT pregnant or trying to get pregnant, here are some fun wines on the market that make you feel oh-so-special (as if drinking the wine isn’t enough). [Read more…]
Gratitude

This past summer, our friends Luis and Vane joined us for a little beach get-away to Cape May, New Jersey. Bless their hearts for being brave and spending their vacation with a family of four! We rented a big SUV and drove for about three hours to the shore.
We ate, drank and exercised too! For some reason, this morning I remembered that while Vane and I did a workout on the beach, we did a little breathing exercise and somehow it flowed into paying gratitude to our bodies, our minds and…the ocean. I used to work for The Chopra Center in New York City years ago and I remember listening to Deepak Chopra talk about how nothing is a coincidence. Things align themselves in a way that is supposed to work for you. We need to take in the beauty of everything…see it, feel it, savor it and be grateful for it. That is why I love this latest article in the Dining and Wine section of the New York Times that published two days ago. Mindful Eating as Food for Thought is the anti-diet, it encourages people to [Read more…]
The Boobie Beanie

The Boobie Beanie: $4.95 from Etsy seller SarasStitches!
This is doing the Facebook rounds and I stole it from my friend Pablo. I have nursed my 2 boys in public and as discreetly as possible. But with the news back in December about the Target protests or “nurse-ins”, I thought what a great way to take a stand. My 3rd baby is kicking while I look at this image. What a great shower gift! hint hint wink wink.
